Roster, Company E, 13th Georgia Cavalry

Company E of what later became the 13th Georgia Cavalry was mustered into Confederate service on 14 May 1862, although most of the men had volunteered two days earlier. Originally, it was part of the 1st Regiment, Georgia Partisan Rangers and subsequently became Company E of the 16th Battalion Georgia Cavalry. The 16th Battalion having been increased to ten companies, its designation was changed to 13th Regiment Georgia Cavalry, to take effect from May 2, 1864 by Special Order No. 12, dated 16 Jan 1865. All records of individual soldiers are filed under 13th Georgia Cavalry.

I started with a list of soldiers from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System and then used the Compiled Military Service Records to provide details. I found two soldiers in the CMSR who did not appear in the CWSS, and there may be others. Please e-mail me with any additions or corrections.

In the roster below, all soldiers were privates throughout their military careers unless otherwise stated. I have not included every single entry in every soldier’s Compiled Military Service Record. For example, I have not included appearance on a receipt roll for clothing unless the soldier’s file is extremely scant. If a soldier is listed on a muster roll without further comment, then he was listed as present. Soldiers absent, on details, etc. are so noted. Officers tend to have large files which include various requisitions and receipts which I have not, in most cases, included here.

Thurman is the same person, but pending further research I’ll treat them as one.]
